Used by students in New York City schools, the WildLab Edu engages learners with the basics of bird identification. Along with associated curricula and educational activities found on the WildLab.org Web site, the WildLab Edu is a powerful way to see the environment in a whole new way. The application includes photographs, audio, and range maps for 108 birds. The application helps learners through a process of elimination that leads to a correct identification. Users select a habitat, then the shape most similar to the bird sighted. From a short list, users select the bird most similar to the one they see, using photographs, range maps, and songs and calls for each species. The application saves each sighting with location, habitat, and weather information, and sightings are also available in the user’s online WildLab.org account. Features include: 1.) A map, with both user and eBird hotspots. 2.) A quick entry view to enter birds you already know; from this page you can enter any of 2055 species of birds. 3.) Facebook Connect to share sightings with others through your social network. 4.) Twitter integration, creating a real-time database of sightings tagged with #wildlab. 5.) Built-in email functionality to share your sightings with birding groups and listserves. 6.) The ability to create Events and have others join them for collaborative birding. 7.) A sightings list, so if there is loss of service, users can upload the sighting later. Let us know what you see!
